CMT Association Membership Application

Once you are an Affiliate Member, you can begin the process of becoming a Professional Member. There are 2 different tracks you can take.

  1. You can sit for and pass all 3 exam levels of the CMT Program. If you do so, then you only need to provide evidence of 3 years of approved work experience and 3 acceptable references.
  2. You can choose not to sit the CMT Program exams, in which case you will need to provide 5 years of approved work experience and 3 acceptable references.

Approved professional work experience is defined as someone who:

  • Has been employed in a job role within the field of Finance. This includes any aspect of a company’s business that relates to Finance, including functions related to accounting, marketing, actuary, portfolio management, compliance, financial planning, insurance, and numerous others.
  • Additionally, those who have supervised, overseen, or managed individuals or teams who practice activities within the field of Finance would also qualify.
  • Those who have taught, trained, or coached individuals about subjects related to Finance.
  • Those who have publicized Finance-related material as a member of the media.
  • You must have received compensation for your services. Managing one’s own or one’s own family and/or friends’ investments (without compensation) does not constitute Approved Professional Work Experience.

This application is used to approve both Professional Membership and CMT Charterholder use. Individuals approved for Professional Membership are able to refer to themselves as CMT Professional Members

Individuals who a) have passed all 3 exam levels of the CMT Program, b) been approved for Professional Membership, and c) are in good standing are designated by the Board of Directors as CMT Charterholders. They are the only people able to use the CMT designation and refer to themselves as CMT Charterholders.

In addition to the professional work experience, applicants must name three (3) references who have Member Status with the CMT Association. One reference without Member Status may be used as long as that reference is one’s immediate supervisor at their current job. No more than one reference may be affiliated with your current firm.

If you wish to check on your own membership status, charterholder renewal status, or the status of another member, please send an email with the details of your request to admin@cmtassociation.org.
